The real deal
I love this sleep system! Yes, if you pack the whole thing it's heavy for backpacking, but you can just pack the parts you need for a given trip. I mostly do warm weather backpacking, but with this I'm ready to head to higher elevations where the zombies can't go. The gore-tex shell kicks butt, the bags are the best qauality out there. This is the newest version, and it's what the military is currently purchasing FOR A REASON. Excellent stuff! 2 different size compression stuff sacks, so you can use the smaller one if you only want to take the bivy and patrol bags. Yes, you can buy ultra-lightweight bags, but judging by the ones I've tried, you might just as well take a bedsheet instead and save a wad of cash. This thing is warm, comfortable, and waterproof.

5 peice modular sleep system
lets just start off by saying this is a serious bag. have yet to experience conditions neccissary for the heavy bag but i did take the patrol bag and the bivy out to havasu falls in northern Arizona this past weekend. first night got down to 34 degrees and the second was around 37-38 if i had to guess. (didnt record the second night)first night i slept like a baby, no need for thermals or anything like that the bag and the bivy was all that was needed and the second night i actually had to take the bivy off it got so warm. bag was great, no separation of inner materials leaving cold spots or anything like that. bivy pulls over the head to trap warmth but still somehow has great ventilation so your not stuck breathing in your own carbon dioxide all night. excellent bag and plan on buying one for everyone in my home. plus without the heavy bag it sinches down super small and really doesnt weigh much at all. for the price, ruggedness, and reliability id give this bag 10 stars if i could.
Don't hesitate to buy
Plenty has been written here and elsewhere about how great this system is - albeit somewhat heavy.
Instead of piling on, I'll focus on the quality of the item I received, should its 'used' or 'surplus' nature be of a concern to you as it was to me. Hopefully you'll receive one of as good quality as mine.
When I got it home, I opened everything out, laid it all on the floor, tried all the zippers, pulled all the cords, and checked all the stitching. Then, I turned the bags inside out and checked all the stitching again. After that, I turned the bags back rightside out and snapped all the pieces together, checking all the snaps were in good shape.
The only imperfection in the entire set was some very slight wear on one end of the outer stuff sack - shelf wear I'd call it. Everything else appeared absolutely perfect. No weird smells or stains - no bad threads. At first I thought the light bag had some tattered threads around the head and neck area, but they...
